Minimum School Safety Standards

  • Safety Laminate or School Guard Glass:
    All entry/exit doors must have safety laminate or school guard glass, with controlled access.

  • Ballistic Protection for Classrooms:
    Classrooms must be protected by a UL Level 8 ballistic door. Any adjacent side window glass must also be UL Level 8.

  • Ballistic Protection for Common Areas:
    The library, media room, computer lab, or any other large spaces must have ballistic protection similar to that of classrooms.

  • Active Shooter Notification System:
    A school-wide notification system for active shooter situations, separate from the fire alarm system, featuring blue strobes and horns.

  • Wireless Alert Devices:
    Individual wireless alert fobs or similar devices to initiate the alarm.

  • IP Camera Access:
    IP cameras with access for 9-1-1 emergency services.

  • Actionable Intelligence App:
    An app that reports the location of wounded individuals and the type of injury sustained.

  • Classroom Gunshot Triage Kits:
    Each classroom must have a gunshot triage kit. Additionally, a triage app must be available on every staff member’s phone, and all teachers must receive triage training.

  • School Resource Officer (SRO) or Trained Armed Security:
    Each school must have a School Resource Officer (SRO) or trained armed security personnel.
