American schools remain vulnerable to a mass shooting/mass casualty incident despite the ever-increasing threat. The 2010s were the deadliest decade for school shootings in U.S. history, and the 2020s are on a trajectory to be even deadlier. From 2010 to 2019, there were 265 shooting incidents, resulting in 207 children, teachers, and staff killed and 385 wounded. From 2020 to September 2024, there have been 202 shooting incidents, with 130 killed and 243 wounded. Schools should be sanctuaries, not sites where tragedy can strike at any moment.
